Burgos

11 oktober 2015 - Burgos, Spanje

That with my heel happened on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning I couldn't put the slightest pressure on my left foot. Moving was sheer agony. We decided we would take the bus to Burgos, some 20km away. The warden of the hostel offered to give us a ride with his car to the bus stop. There was a hotel nearby where we could wait. I brought my stick along. Doug was carrying the two backpacks. In the hotel we had coffee and something to eat. There was wifi so we looked up what I had and what to do about it. Basically you just have to give it time to heal and to stay off the heel as much as possible. The main bus station was very close to the city centre. I stayed with the two backpacks and Doug went out to find us a place to stay. Eventually he came back with a cane. He had found a small room in a "pensione". He told the landlady I had problems walking and she gave him the cane. It was only 5 min walking but it took me about 20. I was relieved to go and lie down. Wednesday and Thursday we stayed put, only going out to eat something. The landlady gave me a pair of crutches (moletas) to use. On Friday morning Doug went to see the museum of evolution. He found it interesting. On Saturday we went around Burgos and took pictures. We also bought a pair of walking poles for me. My heel is improving very slowly. I can walk on my left toes now. I find it very hard to give up on the Camino. So we have come to a decision as to what to do next. Tonight we take the bus to Malaga. We have been entertaining the thought to spend some winter months in the south of Spain. So we are going to check out some possibilities. We're planning to stay there for two weeks minimum. If I can walk again we will continue the Camino. If not we'll return home via the Netherlands and continue at a later date. So today (Sunday) is our last day in Burgos. We went and visited the cathedral. It was awesome! So beautiful and artistic and a lot of richness! Last night we had been to the pilgrim's service in the side chapel which was also impressive.
